Biden-Netanyahu Disagreement on Israel:
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that there is widespread public support for Israel in the United States.
US President Joe Biden warned on Tuesday that Israel is at risk of losing global support in this war. Immediately after that came comments from Netanyahu himself demanding massive support from the United States.
According to that poll, more than 80 percent of Americans support Israel in the Gaza conflict.
According to Benjamin Netanyahu, this massive public support for Israel in the US will motivate them to fight against Hamas “until total victory is achieved”.
US officials said they were continuing to work on a possible deal for a ceasefire.
In Tuesday’s statement, Netanyahu said he has been leading a campaign since the start of the conflict. The main goal of the campaign is to “resist international pressure to end the war early and rally support for Israel.”
“We are remarkably successful in this regard,” Netanyahu claimed, citing a recent Harvard-Harris poll. According to the survey, 82 percent of the American public supports Israel.
“This information gives strength to continue the campaign until complete victory is achieved.” The United States, on the other hand, is hopeful of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza “by next Monday.”
President Biden issued a warning on Monday that the Israeli government could “lose global support” if it does not back down from its hard-line stance.
Another poll conducted by the Associated Press and Norc, however, showed the opposite of Netanyahu’s claim.
According to that poll, in January, nearly half of Americans think “Israel has gone too far.” In November this rate was 40 percent. That is, the number of people with similar opinions has increased in the last two months.
White House and State Department officials confirmed the information on Tuesday as talks continue on a temporary ceasefire.
However, they refused to elaborate on the content of the talks or the possible timeframe.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told the media that “significant progress” was made last week in reaching an agreement to allow humanitarian aid and the release of hostages from Gaza.
He added, “We are trying to build on that progress this week to build on the agreement. The President and other officials have been maintaining round-the-clock communication with partners in the region.
“But, even after 24 hours of the President’s speech, no agreement has been reached, that’s right. There is a lot more work to be done.”
Kirby said they were hoping for a six-week break in the war. The duration is quite long compared to previous breaks.
“This may lead to a more efficient search in the future. That might lead to a way to end the conflict,” he said.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the country’s diplomats were working with Qatar, Egypt and Israel.
“We are trying to finalize this agreement. However, it will require the consent of Hamas at the end,” he added.
A Hamas official previously told BBC News the group’s priority was ending the conflict over freeing the hostages.
On October 7, 1,200 people were killed in an armed attack by Hamas members in the south of Israel. 253 hostages were taken to Gaza, some of whom were released.
Israel then launched a large-scale air and ground attack on Gaza. According to the Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip, 29,878 people have been killed since then. 96 people have died in the last 24 hours. The total number of injured is over 70 thousand.
